I'm getting the Multiversity issue this week, and I'll be grabbing Futures End issues for Wonder Woman, Batwoman and Pandora. Very female centric week!
Plus, some Avengers stuff.
What I am picking up this week is some more BPRD trades, as I am WAY, WAY behind. After Ben Daimo left, I sort of lost my love for BPRD for a bit, but I think, my interest is slowly seeping back.
Is the Devilers any good?
I enjoyed SHOOT from Darkhorse, but it kind of...floundered. I also enjoyed Perhapanauts, because of how wonderfully twee it was.

I really liked the first issue of Devilers. The second issue not quite as much. #3 will be the deciding issue for me. If my enjoyment drops again, the book will drop. If it's the same as #2 I will likely give it another issue. If it reaches the enjoyment level of #1 I will likely be in for the long haul. #2 just seemed a bit disjointed and had a bit of a wtf moment in it that just kind of destroyed the suspension of disbelief necessary in the kind of horror story it is. Fialkov has been very hit or miss for me but I enjoyed the early part of his run on I, Vampire so decided to give the horror series of his a chance. I thought I, Vampire fell aprt after the JLD cross-over because Fialkov seemed to fall back on the kind of fanboyish "wouldn't it be cool type plotting" that plagues a lot of modern comics instead of solid storytelling, and Devilers #2 reeked of that as well, so I was extremely disappointed after a really strong set up and concept in the first issue.

Just read the second issue of Star Spangled War Stories and despite the Cooke covers and Hampton interior art, this one's going in the drop pile....all it takes is using the mythical 4th Indy movie refrigerator trick for a character to survive an explosion and the book is auto-drop!

A few disappointing reads...Sensation Comics #1, Original Sin #8 and Moon Knight #7. Sigh, well one is done, one is dropped and the other's tryout failed.
George Perez's Sirens #1 was an interesting start, a bit disjointed for a first issue, but an interesting premise, gorgeous art and characters I want to learn more about mean I will likely stick out the 6 issue mini.
Also, the shopping list for the coming week...no Marvel or DC on it....
Dark Horse Conan the Avenger #6 Groo vs. Conan #3 Robert E. Howard's Savage Sword #9
Dynamite Red Sonja #12
Image Fatale tpb Vol. 5 Outcast by Kirkman and Azaceta #4

I haven't read this yet (it's at the top of my read pile), but I love the concept, the new Doc Fate logo and the redesigned look.... Is it bad that this Doc Fate concept excites me more than anything DC has done in about 5-10 years.... -M

It's amazing, isn't it? I certainly think/hope that once this is all said and done, DC really commit to the Multiverse and give us at least an Anthology staring the Multiverse characters.
I want to see more of Dino Cop, Spore and of course, the Aboriginal Wandjina. That design was amazing.

I do pretty much have a personal pantheon of characters/creators I will check out/collect, but I am not a blind follower of either, if a current set of stories (or even an older run) about one of my pantheon characters is bad, I will not support it by buying it. Buying bad versions of characters sends the wrong message to companies about what will sell. Even if you comment and complain, you still support the bad versions with your money keeping them viable. Same with creators. Creators track record, some good, some bad, and I tend to follow certain creators, but if they do a project I don't like, well I will drop/skip it, again don't want to send the wrong message about what sells.
So that pantheon...
characters: Conan, Kull, Solomon Kane, Red Sonja, Flash Gordon, Dr. Strange, Phantom Stranger, Spectre, Doctor Fate, Madame Xanadu, Zatanna, and to a lesser extent Hawkman, Hawkwoman/Hawkgirl, the Phantom, and Ghost Rider
creators: Robert E. Howard, Frank Frazetta, Clark Ashton Smith, H.P. Lovecraft, Joe Kubert, Jim Steranko, Moebius, Kurt Busiek, Warren Ellis, Jim Starlin, George Perez, Francisco Francavilla, Ed Brubaker, Greg Rucka, Mike Grell, Howard Chaykin, Mark Waid, Darwyn Cooke, and to a lesser extent John Ostrander, Barry Windsor-Smith, Mike Mignola, Matt Wagner and Walt Simonson.
I certainly like other characters and creators, but those will get me to at least take a look every time, no guarantee I will continue to buy, but they at least get me to the table to try.

Just got an order in from Lonestar-I had traded in the 4 issue Rise of Apocalypse mini and the 4 issues of the Big Time arc from Amazing Spidey (had picked up a trade of the arc for $5 at Wal-Mart so didn't need originals anymore) and gotten trade credit. With it, I picked up the following... first, knocked off one of my top 3 wants...DC Special #5 the Joe Kubert appreciation issue... then completed some runs... -got Legend of the Hawkman #2 (Michael Lark art) to finish the 3 issue mini -The Zauriel one-shot to finish off the Helmet of Fate event -Guns of the Dragon 2-4 -7 issues of the Reignof the Zodiac series by Keith Giffen and Colleen Doran (I had 1 of the issues already) and Kull and the Barbarians, the b&w mag issues 2 & 3 o finish off the series then picked up some random stuff- the 3 issue Star-Lord mini written by Timothy Zahn (wanted to get it before specualtion bubble drove up prices), a couple of issues of Red Sonja from the 70s (4 & 5) and issue 11 of Savage Tales-both are runs I am working on completing but still have more to go. In a non-comic related (mostly) acquisition, went to an estate sale run by Amy's aunt today and found this nifty statue... for $4. It has taken its place on one of the display shelves in the comic room... -M

Nice haul!
I got my weekly comics and I have to give a shout out to Detective Comics #35. I enjoyed the last arc by Buccellato and Manapul, but this was fantastic. I've always loved the Batman arcs which are little self-continued continuity free stories and this was one of them. It was super dark and super moody, perpetuated mainly by John Paul Leon's art, which was just fantastic. One of my biggest issues with DC is their almost 90s Image-Esque House Style, but this was about as far as you can get from that. Between this and Gotham Academy, there's a chance DC could be back on the upswing. They just gotta keep this up.

I really did struggle a bit with Klarion, more so because I felt like the writer was just skipping huge bits because she wanted to, not needed too. I like the reference to Bleak, more so because Morrison or whomever gave him that last name, but references to Bleeker Street are always appreciated.
I was expecting more...modern magic introduction and use. As always with magic, its less concepts and more "OH WE DO ENERGY HANDS NOW, YEAH?" I get that dueling is supposed to be flashy, but...Nightwatch did it better. Modern Magic should be pulling light from street lamps and using Electrical wires as whips not "Stuff glows now because = modern"
Perhaps I need to give it a minute to sort itself out but...it all seems too convenient, too bland and too...half baked, I guess.

For those interested in buying comic related stuff-TFAW (Thing from Another world) website is having a weeklong progressive sale-this is the last week of it, it ends Friday and many items are 70% off including a boat ton of Marvel Masterworks, DC Archives (Golden Age Starman and All Star Comics Archives 70% Miller!), Showcase volumes plus lots of other trades, comics etc.
Spent a little X-Mas money early (i..e I will use X-Mas money to pay the credit card bill when it comes in) and picked up the following
for $15 each Frank Frazetta Art and Remembrance HC Golden Age Hawkman Archives Vol. 1
for $9 each Marvel Masterworks Golden Age Captain America Vol. 1 softcover Marvel Masterworks Golden Age Sub-Mariner Vol. 1 softcover
and for under $4 each Will Eisner Companion sc Michael Kaluta Sketchbook series Vol. 1 Lobster Johnson: The Satan Factory prose novel
was tempted by lots of other stuff (there's 99 pages of stuff at 70% off) but had to stay within a limited budget.

Anyone check out the new Bat family launches and new directions?
Out of curiosity I picked up Catwoman #35, Batgirl #35, Gotham Academy #1 and Arkham Manor #1, and enjoyed 3 of the 4 (Arkham Manor didn't really do it for me). Not sure I will keep getting them but Gotham Academy caught my wife's fancy as well, so for now is on the pull list.

I read all three as well. I enjoyed all of them, but I'll agree something was missing in Arkham Manor. I really wanted to like it as it probably felt the most not like a mainstream comic, but unfortunately I didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped. I'm not sure if any of them are going to make it on my pull list, but I'm happy if more DC books are going to feel like this.

Picked up and read Tooth & Claw #1, Kurt Busiek's new Image series. Sprawling fantasy and magic with anthropomorphic animal-men (yes I know the redundancy inherent in that). Great stuff, oversized first issue only $2.99, great premise and set up, great character hooks, a touch of mystery & intrigue-pretty much all you could ask for in a first issue. And the art by Benjamin Dewey is gorgeous, as are the colors by Jordie Bellaire-but that is par for the course for her, one of the best colorists working right now!

Haven't really bought any new comics at all this year, but did read the first volumes of Batman Eternal and Future's End form the library. I did sort of make one new comic purchase, in that I subscribed to Heavy Metal. New issues off the stands are $8, but a 6 issue sub was only $22. I also picked up a few classic back issues from '81 and '82 and the Chaos GN by Druillet from their website. I did purge a bunch of back issues, trading some to friends on the Classic Comics board I frequent for some misc. stuff and traded a bunch to Lonestar, using the credit to load up on some reading material... I picked up the first 4 issues of Marvel's Savage Sword of Conan... finished off my run of Kirby's OMAC series from the Bronze Age... filled in all but a handful of what I needed of Grell's Green Arrow... finished off the Bronze Age Ragman series with Kubert covers and the LEgend of Wonder Woman mini done by Trina Robbins and Kurt Busiek which DC published to fill the gap between the end of the original Wonder Woman series and the launch of Perez's Wonder Woman... and then got some classic Heavy Metals form the first 2-3 years of its existence... I have a second order coming form Lonestar with the rest of the credit, but it is currently en route, but consists of... Savage Tales #2 (70s b&w precursor to Savage Sword of Conan) issues 11 and 12 of Jack Kirby's Demon all but 1 issue of the Bronze Age Ka-Zar series form Marvel to complete the run all but 1 the issues of Rima the Jungle Girl (with Kubert covers to boot) that I needed to finish the run sll the issues I needed to complete the runs of Scare Tactics (part of DC's late 90s Wierdoverse) and Marvel's Skull the Slayer from the Bronze Age. via trade I picked up a reprint of Steranko's Nick Fury #1 (the one that came with the Marvel Legends action figure, a volume of Lone Wolf and Cub, a bunch of Sgt. Rock Specials, a handful of issues of the Bronze Age Inhumans series, a handful of Gold Key Tarzan issues form the 60s, a bunch of issues of King Conan, the Marvel Visionaries: Steranko trade that collects his X-Men and Capt. America stuff plus some horror and romance stories he did for Marvel in the early 70s, and ahandful of issues of the 90s Hawkman series, more of the Grell GA stuff I am working on and some of Kirby's 80s indy books from Pacific. So lots of interesting stuff to process and get to reading eventually, without laying out much in the way of cash, as my budget is extremely limited right now. Mostly it's trade and just pay for postage for the stuff I am getting (aside from the Heavy Metal sub). -M
