Anyone like Doctor Who?
I figured I'd ask since I'm off to a screening of the Season Premiere at my local cinema and I'd love a good discussion.

Amy is a devoted Whovian. I haven't really followed the new Who though since Tennant's second season. Donna annoyed me and I stopped watching during her season, and never really went back. I started watching bothTomBaker and Jon Pertwee concurrently when both were airing on PBS here in the States in the early/mid 80s, and watched through the Davison years, and have gone back and seen parts of Hartnell and Troughton, and sampled a bit of Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy, but as well made as the new Who is, it lacks some of the charm classic Who had for me. I am slowly making my way through the first Hartness season now on Hulu though. I may watch the Capaldi stuff to see when it hits Hulu, but I have 2+ seasons of some shows sitting on my DVR and am not looking to add more to my watch when I get a chance list, and Who hasn't made it to my must watch list in years.

I definitely like both Classic Doctor Who and New Doctor Who, but for very different reasons. The reason I like both is because it focuses on a protagonist who is generally speaking is driven by his compassion for all forms of life (unless you're a Dalek) and at the end of the day, he's going to use his brain long before he ever uses his brawn. When he does have to fight someone, there's never any doubt that it's his last resort.
Anyways, from the two episodes of his run so far, I really like Peter Capaldi. He is certainly a Doctor based more around the Classic era (even if the stories are purely modern). He has the grumpiness of Hartnell, the madness of Tom Baker and Troughton, hints of flair and class that are purely Pertwee and some of the cold aloofness of Tom Baker as well. I don't see much of any of the modern Doctors in him actually. A little bit of Eccleston perhaps.
Eitherway, I think that if the stories continue to be good, I think Capaldi will be my Doctor, as he's the newest since I started following the show a year and a half ago. I don't think he'll unseat Patrick Troughton as my favorite, but he'll be the one I associate my time as a fan with. I don't feel genuine somone who stopped playing the role 20 years before I was born "My Doctor..."
